Plain-Language Explanation for Contractors and Project Managers

If you're running a construction project in BC and someone hands you a spec sheet that says "BCMoT spec aggregate required," here's exactly what that means — and how Patterson Gravel Pit supplies it.

What BCMoT Stands For

BCMoT stands for the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. They set the standards for materials used on provincial roads, highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects funded by government. When a spec sheet references BCMoT, it means the material must meet their defined quality, gradation, and performance criteria.

What "Spec" Actually Means

Specification aggregate isn't just any gravel. It has to meet defined criteria for:

Gradation — the distribution of particle sizes. BCMoT defines what percentage of material passes through specific sieve sizes. This ensures the aggregate compacts predictably and performs consistently under load.

Cleanliness — the material must be free of clay, organic material, and excessive fines. Clay in aggregate absorbs water, swells, and causes frost heave in Northern BC winters. Spec aggregate doesn't have it.

Hardness and durability — softer rock breaks down under traffic and load cycles. Spec aggregate is tested for resistance to abrasion. Harder rock holds its gradation longer under real-world conditions.

Why Patterson Rock Passes Spec

Our aggregate originated from north of Stuart Lake on the Cordilleran Ice Sheet during the Wisconsin Glaciation period. The glacier deposited this material in the hills south of Prince George when it stalled — which is why our pit runs 65 feet deep before rock quality changes.

That geological origin means our rock is harder than most aggregate in the Prince George region, completely clay-free, and naturally well-graded. It's not processed to meet spec — the rock quality allows it to meet spec as it comes from the pit.

Which Patterson Products Meet BCMoT Spec

Clear Crush (3/4" and 1.5") — meets BCMoT specification for drainage applications, pipe bedding, and drainage structures.

1" Minus — meets BCMoT road base specification. Angular gravel with fines that compacts hard and stays under traffic load.

Drain Rock (1" and 1.5") — meets BCMoT spec for drainage applications and water management installations.

When Do You Need BCMoT Spec?

Any project involving government funding, municipal infrastructure, provincial road work, or a contract with spec requirements written in. If your project engineer or project manager has specified BCMoT material, you need a documented source. Patterson can supply that.

For private residential and commercial projects without spec requirements, our products still perform to the same standard — you're just not required to document it. Either way, you're getting the same rock.
